Sarah* had come to see us at AM Dietetics after being diagnosed with IBS-D (diarrhoea dominant IBS). Her symptoms included bloating, wind, gut pain, cramping, diarrhoea, and frequent trips to the toilet. Sarah was hoping to go on the Low FODMAP Diet, in order to reduce her symptoms. What if the low fodmap diet isn’t working? You’ve been on the elimination phase of the Low FODMAP diet and it doesnt seem to be working. What’s going on?

You may be thinking about trying the Low FODMAP diet. The FODMAP diet has been shown to improve symptoms in 50-80% of patients with IBS but it’s not for everyone. In fact you may not even need to try it at all. Before starting the Low FODMAP diet, you may need to make some basic “first line” changes to your diet.

You may have heard of the low FODMAP diet, the Australian “invented” diet which has a reported 75% success rate in significantly reducing IBS symptoms. Lately I’ve been quite concerned to hear that a lot of people have been trying to “go it alone” on the low FODMAP diet. I’ve even been hearing from clients that their GPs have diagnosed them with IBS and then suggested they google FODMAPs in order to follow the diet. While following the diet may give great results, it can also be a confusing and difficult process without the help of a Dietitian.

I finally went and got myself some Kefir grains so I can try out homemade brewing of the stuff.
Kefir? You ask. Kefir is pretty much a fermented milk drink. (I am using milk Kefir, although there is a”water” version of it as well.).
When you hear fermented milk drink, basically think ….probiotic drink.
